The Native American Sustainable Housing Initiative (NASHI) is an interdisciplinary collaboration of faculty, students and volunteers at the University of Colorado seeking to improve housing conditions on Tribal lands through research, education and outreach activities (nashidesignbuild.org ).
“Through a combination of research, interdisciplinary coursework and a community-based ‘real world’ approach to architecture and design education, students participating in the NASHI design-build program will acquire the critical skills needed to address the pressing social and environmental challenges facing numerous local and global communities,” said Rob Pyatt instructor, research associate, and founder of the NASHI program.
Specifically, this initiative establishes a sustainable, affordable and culturally appropriate housing research, design and demonstration home project on the Oglala Lakota College (OLC) campus as the foundation for an ongoing academic service-learning program between the CU College of Architecture and Planning (www.ucdenver.edu ) and the Construction Technology program at OLC (www.olc.edu ).
“The overall objective of the project will be to develop a comprehensive case study to help inform the future housing choices for the Oglala Sioux Tribe,” said Doug Noyes, director of the Construction Technologies program at the Oglala Lakota College.
“We will also develop a set of ‘best practices’ for sustainable construction on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and an ‘applied research laboratory’ to educate OLC and CU students in the design and construction of sustainable, affordable, culturally inclusive and regionally appropriate housing,” said Pyatt.
In addition, NASHI will collaborate with the Oyate Omnicye Regional Planning Project (www.OglalaLakotaPlan.org ) and the Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation (CDC) a Lakota non-profit organization working to create regenerative sustainable development on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (www.ThunderValley.org ).
“One of the overarching initiatives emerging from the Oyate Omnicye Regional Planning Project is called Model Community Development. This is intended to take a more comprehensive approach to combating the widespread absence of efficient, affordable, durable, healthy and culturally relevant housing in our Region. Lakota tribal members on Pine Ridge face an overall severe lack of housing, and a majority of the homes in existence are substandard, plagued by black mold, are energy inefficient resulting in high heating/cooling costs in our harsh temperature extremes, and are not designed to withstand the high number of occupants living under the same roof as it is common for extended families to share living space,” said Nick Tilsen, executive director of Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation.
“We are actively working to develop solutions to this problem, Thunder Valley CDC is in the process of building a planned community 1/4 North Of Sharps Corner in the Porcupine District on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which will include homes, apartments, business, community facilities, plots for food production and sustainable infrastructure. It's important that we focus on creating synergy and collaboration to achieve mutual success. We here at Thunder Valley CDC believe Mr. Pyatt’s project, with its focus on implementing sustainable and culturally relevant construction methods in our communities, collecting data on the efficiency of the methods employed, and strengthening the skills and knowledge of our youth to continue these efforts in the future, complements and leverages our work and will provide lasting contributions to our efforts and provide us with sustainable house models and systems that can be implemented in our planned community development project,” Said Tilsen.
“The program was created to address the need for healthy, sustainable and affordable housing and increase the capacity and knowledge and resources of Tribal communities to build environmentally sound, sustainable and energy efficient homes that are right for their culture and region (people and place),” said Dr. Doreen E Martinez, co- director of the NASHI program, Indigenous Studies scholar, and assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.
“NASHI distinctly centers Indigenous understandings and values, and the structure of NASHI ensures that Indigenous beliefs and practices are vitally incorporated into the homes’ build process,” said Martinez.
* Broader impacts include institutionalizing the information and results within the community; applying the technology to foster broader economic development opportunities; and leveraging significant investments currently underway in the region.
